High-Quality Kitchen Cabinet Paint Kit for a Professional Look
When it comes to cabinet painting, many homeowners opt for a cost-effective solution instead of replacing them entirely. While there are several manufacturers that make a cabinet paint kit, professional painters often view them as gimmicky and not providing real value. The goal of these cabinet paint kits is to market a product that appears to make the process simple. However, in reality, these products usually do not hold up over time or make things easier. If they did, professionals would be using them. Unfortunately, there is currently no good kitchen cabinet painting kit available that produces a high-quality finish and stands the test of time.
The reality is that most people choose to paint their cabinets instead of replacing them as a cost-saving endeavor. Replacing kitchen cabinets can cost over $10,000 for a complete kitchen, taking into consideration the cost of the cabinets, installation, and new countertops. On the other hand, hiring a professional painting contractor to refinish and paint the cabinets typically costs around $4,000 to $5,000 for a kitchen. Many homeowners attempt to paint their cabinets themselves but often run into issues and end up needing professional help to salvage their kitchen. Most people are not willing to do the necessary prep work to prepare the cabinets for painting, which is why cabinet painting kits are marketed as easy solutions that require no sanding, stripping, or priming.
As a painting contractor, we have seen many homeowners try to attempt this themselves, only to get themselves into a situation where we need to sand and strip the cabinets in order to salvage the kitchen. Most people do not want to do the prep work that is needed to prepare the cabinets for painting. That’s why most of the kits we see at stores use marketing verbiage such as:
- Complete coating kit – Transforms cabinets to a new look
- Easy DIY cabinet paint kit – no sanding, stripping or priming
However, the reviews for these cabinet painting kits often reveal their limitations. Some customers report that the paint turns yellow over time, while others find that the coverage is poor, requiring multiple coats to achieve a satisfactory result. The cabinet refinishing paint kit may not deliver the desired outcome, especially for those without much experience in painting cabinets. I always like to read the reviews, and here are just a few for this product:
Cabinet Paint Kit Negative Reviews
It will turn yellow
I did my homework on using this product. I watched the youtube videos many times, read the provided instructions, & read multiple product reviews. I followed the instructions/recmmendations used top quatly brushes & was extremely patience during the entire process. I did read a few reviews that said over time the poly will make the cabinets look yellow, though it was only 1 or 2 reviews it happened to me. 3 weeks later. DO NOT BUY DO NOT USE! It Now i have to hire a pro to come fix this $$
Get TWO sets
While this is a decent paint, it does NOT cover 100sq ft with one or two coats. I mean it could but the coverage would suck. FIVE COATS is what I had to use to actually make it look GOOD. That said, I would use it again but I would read reviews first so I buy enough the FIRST time. A little disappointed in Rustoleum but overall their paint is good.
Terrible results
Followed the directions exactly. Did 2 coats of bond coat and it didn’t cover the cabinet. Did 3 coats to get it covered and the paint turned yellow. When using the top coat, it turned it extremely yellow. Very disappointed!
The product is not good for easy painting
After using the deglosser and painting two coats, the final result looks bad and not easy for people who doesn’t a lot of experience painting cabinets.
So what can you do if you want to paint your cabinets, but can’t afford to pay a painting contractor to refinish your cabinets?
What to Do?
First off, you can watch some YouTube videos to find out what the professionals use. The Idaho Painter has a lot of how-to videos that are mostly created with professional results in mind. Some paint store offer classes, so you can check with your local retail stores.
At Walls by Design, we created a hybrid service for the DIY homeowner we call our DIY PRO Cabinet Painting program. We partner WITH our homeowners to help you complete your project at about half the cost of hiring our team to do a full-service project. You would need to bring us your doors and drawers, and we teach you how to paint your cabinet boxes. We know that when your kitchen is re-assembled, you will be looking mostly at your doors and drawers, and spraying doors is a skill that takes a lot of practice. On our average, a full-service project would cost around $4300, but with our DIY PRO Cabinet program, the cost is usually less than $2000, saving you over 50% off a full-service project.
A DIYers Successful Project
Take the example of Rebecca, an avid DIYer who initially felt intimidated by the size of her kitchen cabinet painting project. However, she decided to participate in Walls by Design’s DIY PRO Cabinet Painting program and achieved remarkable results. Rebecca’s 5-star Google review showcases her satisfaction with the program, praising the fast and responsive communication, flexibility in scheduling, and the professionalism of the team. She ended up have great results as can be seen by her photos:
There is a reason these guys have so many consistent 5 star reviews. I decided to give WBD’s new DIY program a try. I’m telling you this is such a cool concept for a business to have! I’m a moderate DIYer. I’ve painted other cabinets in my home but the size of my kitchen was just, INTIMIDATING. This model let me do the easier part while getting the doors away from my kids and dog. I could rest easy knowing they wouldn’t get messed up in such a visible area while also doing some of the work myself to save $$. Win win. Rachel in sales was crazy fast and responsive after I requested a quote. Heather, my project manager was fantastic! We had one day that had to be rescheduled due to a worker being sick and she worked her magic, got us rescheduled without impacting the overall timeline at all. On top of that, my project got to start EARLY. Matthew, our painter called me to check in mid painting. This type of professionalism is not an easy find these days. WBD is hands down the company you need to call for painting. And If you’re interested in a lower budget, DIY option, check out their new program. It’s worth it. And satisfying to know you helped. 🙂

And if you are like most people, and want to see what the kitchen looked like prior to painting the cabinets, here are a few before pictures…
